10 tertiary students off to China for Huawei work-study experience

Ten students from the University of the West Indies, Mona and the University of Technology will benefit from a two-week work-study experience and Asian cultural immersion courtesy of Huwaei in Shenzhen, China.


It’s part of the ICT company’s ‘Seeds for the Future' programme which seeks to develop local information and communications technology talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote a greater understanding of, and interest in, the ICT sector, and improve and encourage regional building and participation in the digital community.

Huawei hosted a welcome reception for the students at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel on Thursday night, which was attended by Education Minister Ruel Reid, who endorsed the programme and advised the students to make the most out of the opportunity.


To be considered for the work-study experience, students must be university undergraduates within the school of computing and school of engineering or other ICT related field; aged between 18 to 28 years old; have a GPA must of over 3.0; have a strong interest in communications and technology and have positive attitude toward Chinese culture.

The first week will see students studying Mandarin for one week at the Beijing Language and Culture University.


In week two, the students will travel to Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen, studying at the Huawei University to learn about the latest ICT technologies with the company's experts and have hands-on practice in industry-leading labs.
