Clay sculptures reflect traditional life in Beijing

The creation of clay figurines is a unique folk handicraft in China created in ancient times by people living along the Yellow and Yangtze rivers and now a valuable intangible cultural heritage. However, few people today seek to master the craft. Huang Dianqin, one of curators of Huafang Arts Center in Beijing, has a large collection of clay figurines gathered together over the past three decades, and she has now put over 100 on display to publicize the need to protect and promote the ancient handicraft. The exhibits also provide a distinctive view of people's lives in old Beijing.
