Education has a long history. Established on November 21, 1934, Guangxi Medical University is located in Nanning City, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which is known as "Green City". It has four campuses, namely, the school-based department under construction, Wuming Campus, Yulin Campus, International Medical Education Exchange and Research Center (Wuxiang Campus), covering an area of about 4000 mu. The predecessor is Guangxi Provincial Medical College. In 1940, the school moved to Guilin. Before 1949, the school moved seven times during the war and changed its name three times. In November 1949, it was renamed Guangxi Medical College. In 1952, the Central Ministry of Health entrusted the Central and Southern Ministry of Health to direct leadership. In April 1953, the Central Ministry of Health approved the renaming of Guangxi Medical College. From July 1954, Guilin moved back to the present site of Nanning City. In May 1996, the Ministry of Education approved the renaming of Guangxi Medical University.

The school is one of the 22 medical colleges established earlier in China, one of the eight earliest fixed-point medical colleges in China to recruit foreign students, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students and overseas Chinese students. It is one of the first 30 universities approved by the Ministry of Education with the qualification of enrolling undergraduate clinical medical students (teaching in English). It is one of the key universities constructed by the Guangxi Government and is also one of the medical education and medicine universities in Guangxi. Currently, there are 1840 full-time teachers, of which 555 are full-time teachers and 623 are deputy ones; 178 are doctoral supervisors and 690 are master's supervisors; 1 is candidate for the National 1000-person Program, 2 are candidate for the National 1000-person Program (1 is a leader in scientific and technological innovation, 1 is a teacher in teaching). 3 are national candidates for the Million-person Talents Project in the new century, and 3 are young and middle-aged professionals with outstanding contributions from the state. The quality of students is good and they come from a wide range of sources. There are 25 635 full-time students, including 11 144 undergraduates, 3 393 master students, 345 doctoral students, 53 post-doctoral students, 844 foreign students and 9556 higher vocational students. Students come from 26 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as 19 countries. There are a wide range of medical and related disciplines. It has formed a complete education and training system for bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctor's degree and post-doctor's degree. It now has seven disciplines of medicine, science, engineering, literature, management, law and education. It is the first batch of authorized units for master's degree and second batch of doctor's degree in China. There are 5 doctoral degree authorization points in basic medicine, clinical medicine, public health and preventive medicine, stomatology, pharmacy and other first-level disciplines and 10 master's degree authorization points in first-level disciplines, 1 doctoral degree training unit in clinical medicine, 1 doctoral degree training unit in stomatology, 6 master's degree training units and 4 post-doctoral research mobile stations (including 2015). In 1998, the clinical medicine postdoctoral research mobile station was awarded the only national excellent postdoctoral research mobile station in Guangxi, and 7 academician workstations were set up. Clinical medicine enters the first 1% of ESI in the world. Since the 1980s, more than 5,000 outstanding teachers and researchers have been sent to universities, hospitals, medical or research institutions, academic institutions, lectures, studies abroad, further studies, degree studies and international academic exchanges in more than 50 countries and regions, such as the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Vietnam and Thailand.
