Gannan Normal University is located in Ganzhou City, a famous national historical and cultural city and a sub-central city of Jiangxi Province. The school was founded in June 1958 as Gannan Teachers'College; renamed Gannan Teachers' College in 1984 and upgraded to a provincial undergraduate teacher's college; became a master's degree awarding unit in 2003 and the only provincial undergraduate teacher's college with the right to grant master's degree in the marginal areas of Gansu, Guangdong, Fujian and Hunan provinces; renamed Gannan Normal University in March 2016 with the approval of the Ministry of Education; and in December 2017, It has been successfully audited and evaluated by the Ministry of Education for undergraduate teaching. The expert group appraised the school as a regional excellent Normal University with distinctive features and good prospects.

The school has three campuses, namely, Gold Campus, Zhanggong Campus and Baita Campus (University Science and Technology Park), covering an area of more than 2,200 mu, with a building area of more than 800,000 square meters, a total value of 233 million yuan for teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment, and a collection of more than 22 million books in the library. There are 15 Teaching colleges, 1 independent college, 1 affiliated middle school and 1 affiliated primary school. There are 73 undergraduate majors covering 10 disciplines, 16 first-level master's degree programs (covering 84 second-level master's degree programs) and 9 authorized master's degree programs. Enrollment for 27 provinces (districts and municipalities) across the country, there are more than 19,000 full-time students, including more than 1,300 graduate students.

The school currently has more than 1000 full-time teachers, including 460 senior professional and technical personnel and more than 300 doctoral teachers. It has been awarded two national characteristic specialties, two national top-quality courses, three comprehensive reform projects of the Ministry of Education, 18 cooperation and education projects of the Ministry of Education, and has established one national Master of Education Professional Degree Research. The school has one provincial first-class discipline and four provincial key disciplines (including one provincial high-level discipline in universities).     The school actively serves local basic education and economic and social development by relying on the training bases for principals (teachers) of primary and secondary schools in Jiangxi Province, the revitalization and development of soft science research bases in the former Central Soviet Area of Jiangxi Province, the Training Centre for senior managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ganzhou City, the research center for planning, design and development of small towns with beautiful rural characteristics and the "Professor Doctor Service Group". The Confucius Institute of Sierra Leone University, the first Confucius Institute in China, has been established in West Africa. The "Singapore research center" of the Ministry of education's national and regional research base has been set up by the Ministry of education.
