Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1954. After more than 60 years of construction and development, Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has become a higher level of teaching, scientific research and medical treatment, and has a certain impact at home and abroad. In 2004, the first batch of schools in China was awarded the excellent conclusion of the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level by the Ministry of Education. It is in the leading position in the field of prescription compatibility, mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion, and clinical research of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of major diseases such as internal medicine, gynecology and nephropathy.

The First Affiliated Hospital (First Clinical Medical College and Nursing College) is the construction unit of the National Clinical Research Base of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Model Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Second Affiliated Hospital (Second Clinical Medical College, Acupuncture and Massage College and Rehabilitation Medical College) is the first Chinese hospital in Heilongjiang Province to be recognized by the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, and is the first batch of modern Chinese medicine hospitals in China. The two affiliated hospitals are all third-class and first-class Chinese medicine hospitals, with 2800 beds, 19 national key specialties and 20 provincial key specialties. The annual outpatient visits exceed 1.4 million and the business income is 1.2 billion yuan. At present, the school is speeding up the construction of the largest old-age maintenance and rehabilitation institution in the three northeastern provinces, which integrates medical treatment, rehabilitation, nursing and old-age care. It covers an area of 400,000 square meters and plans to set up 10,000 old-age maintenance and rehabilitation beds. The school has the only drug safety evaluation center in three northeastern provinces. It has established the GAP research center of Chinese medicinal materials in Heilongjiang Province. It is now the leading unit of the Professional Committee of School-Enterprise Cooperation of the Provincial Pharmaceutical Industry. The school has the qualifications to receive foreign students and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students. It is one of the first institutions approved by the Ministry of Education to recruit foreign students in China. Liu Yandong, former Vice Premier of the State Council, attended a series of activities on cooperation in education of traditional Chinese medicine between China and Hungary held at Semelvis University, and laid the foundation for the teaching building of the Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine.
