Inner Mongolia Agricultural University was formed by the merger of Inner Mongolia Agriculture and Animal Husbandry College and Inner Mongolia Forestry College in 1999. It is a multi-disciplinary university with the characteristics of agriculture, forestry, grassland animal husbandry, agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, arts and other eight disciplines. It has formed the personnel training system of bachelor, master and doctor. There are currently 22 departments (including vocational and technical colleges) such as the Academy of Animal Sciences. In 2001, it became a key university to support the construction of "one province and one school" in the national western development. In 2012, it became a "provincial and ministerial co-construction" University of the State Forestry Administration (now the State Forestry and Grassland Administration) and the people's government of autonomous regions. In 2013, it entered the ranks of the support universities of the national "Central and Western Higher Education Revitalization Plan".

In 1952, the former Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Hebei Agricultural College, Plain Agricultural College and Shanxi Agricultural College relocated to Guisui (now Hohhot) to form Inner Mongolia Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medical College, the first undergraduate college in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 1958, Inner Mongolia Forestry College was established. In 1960, Inner Mongolia College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was renamed Inner Mongolia College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. In 1999, Inner Mongolia Agriculture and Animal Husbandry College and Inner Mongolia Forestry College merged to form Inner Mongolia Agricultural University.

At present, there are 34 877 full-time students in general higher education (28047 at school-based level), of which 2992 are graduate students, covering a total area of 14897 mu (11625 Mu at school-based level) and 3360 mu (2630 Mu at school-based level). The school-based teaching administration room covers an area of 409.2 million square meters, four standard track and field venues (halls), with a total value of 915 million yuan for teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment, and an average value of 302,000 yuan for students.

There are 1 national key disciplines, 3 National Key Cultivation disciplines, 23 provincial and ministerial key disciplines and 11 first-class construction disciplines in autonomous regions. There are 10 post-doctoral research mobile stations, 13 doctoral degree authorization points for first-level disciplines, 24 master degree authorization points for first-level disciplines and 8 types of master degree authorization. There are 79 undergraduate majors in general higher education. There are 2 pilot projects (including 8 majors) of national outstanding agricultural and forestry talents education training program, 7 national characteristic majors and 1 national comprehensive reform pilot specialty.

There are 2770 faculty members (2268 school-based teachers), including 1711 full-time teachers (1380 school-based teachers), 861 teachers with senior professional titles (772 school-based teachers), accounting for 50.32% of the total number of full-time teachers (55.94%) and 1352 teachers with master's degree or above (1 866 school-based teachers), accounting for 79.02% of the total number of full-time teachers (85.94%). PhD teachers accounted for 43.09% (48.91% of the school-based departments). One person was supported by the "Yangtze River Scholar Award Scheme" and the "National Outstanding Youth Science Fund". One person was supported by the "National Outstanding Youth Fund". Two people were leaders of scientific and technological innovation in the "Ten Thousands Plan" of the Central Organization Department. Seven people were selected from the first and second levels of the "Ten Thousands of Talents Project" of the State Council. 89 experts were granted special allowances by the State Council. The outstanding contributions of the state and autonomous regions were made by the young people. In 1997, 46 experts, 15 excellent returnees from abroad from the state and autonomous regions, 3 national labor models and advanced workers, 18 scientific and technological personnel who made outstanding contributions to the frontline of industrial, agricultural and animal husbandry production in the autonomous region, 1 young Chinese female scientist, 3 chief experts of the autonomous region's "333 Talent Project", and 22 candidates from the first and second levels of the "321 Talent Project in the New Century" were selected. There are 80 grassland talents, 23 grassland talents teams and 9 Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Outstanding Talents Award. There are one famous forestry teacher in China, 22 famous forestry teachers in autonomous region and 12 new teachers in autonomous region. There are six members of the Ministry of Education's Supporting Plan for Excellent Talents in the New Century and three vice-chairmen of the College Professional Teaching Steering Committee.

There are 1 national teaching team and 18 autonomous region teaching team in the teaching work school. There are 5 national quality courses and 2 national quality resource sharing courses. There are one experimental area for innovation of national talent training mode, two national experimental teaching demonstration centers, one national off-campus practical education base for college students, one national cultural quality education base for college students, and three first batch of agricultural science and Education Cooperative talents training bases of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture. Six national-level and 36 autonomous-region-level educational and teaching reform research projects have been set up. There are 30 brand majors at the autonomous region level, 5 key construction majors, 1 pilot project for comprehensive reform of undergraduate majors, 9 experimental teaching demonstration centers, 72 top-quality courses at the autonomous region level and 4 top-quality courses. He has won 8 national awards for teaching achievements and 73 autonomous region awards for teaching achievements (26 of them are first-class awards). Over the past 66 years, the school has trained more than 150,000 talents of all kinds, covering all parts of the motherland, and a large part of them have become the leading figures or technical backbone in the field of agricultural and animal husbandry production in the autonomous region.

Since the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Scientific Research, the school has hosted nearly 2,000 scientific research projects at all levels and received more than 1 billion yuan in research revenue, including 513 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including Jieqing, Youqing, key projects and the National Union, with a total expenditure of 247 million yuan. It has hosted four projects of the 13th Five-Year Plan of National Key Research and Development with a total expenditure of 114 million yuan. In 2017 and 2018, Agricultural Sciences entered the first 1% of ESI in the world. Three achievements in the research fields of characteristic animal genome and lactobacillus were published in Nature Communications. He Liang Holi Science and Technology Innovation Award was awarded to 2 people, He Liang Holi Science and Technology Innovation Award was awarded to 1 person, 73 provincial and ministerial science and technology achievements awards were awarded as the first completion unit, including 10 first-class awards, and 2 second-class national science and technology progress awards and 1 second-class Technological Invention Award as the main completion unit. Relying on the "International Science and Technology Cooperation Base", we have presided over 13 key projects of national international cooperation. Thirty school-level scientific and technological innovation (cultivation) teams have been set up, including two in the key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, three in the development plan of the Ministry of Education, two in the Ministry of Agriculture and nine in the autonomous region. One national field scientific research observatory, 56 provincial and ministerial key laboratories (engineering research center, field station and Humanities and social science base) have been built, and two collaborative innovation training centers identified by the Education Department of the Autonomous Region are under construction.

In 2013, "Inner Mongolia Agricultural University New Rural Development Research Institute" was included in the second batch of national colleges and universities new rural development research institute construction plan. Twelve teachers were selected for relevant positions in the 13th Five-Year Plan National Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System. In recent years, the school has signed more than 20 cooperation agreements with Huhhot, Alashan League, Tuyou Banner, Qingshuihe, Helin County, Yili, Mengniu, Mengcao, Jinyu, Sano Sheep Industry, Minfeng Potato Industry and more than 60 new achievements and technologies. The self-developed probiotic strains and veterinary vaccines have been transformed with a total amount of more than 50 million yuan.

Open school attaches great importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation. It has established inter-school cooperation and academic exchanges with more than 60 universities and scientific research institutions in more than a dozen countries, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Russia, Japan and Mongolia. It has also established "China-Canada Sustainable Agricultural Research and Development Center", "Malik Management Center" and "Inner Mongolia Agricultural University Branch Center". Ministry of Education Training and Research Center for Studying Abroad. Over the past five years, the school has sent more than 200 teachers to visit and exchange studies abroad, and more than 700 experts and professors have come to carry out academic exchanges, visiting lectures and other activities. To strengthen the training of foreign students, we have started to receive scholarships from the Autonomous Region Government in 2005, scholarships from the Chinese government in 2008 and scholarships from the Silk Road Government in 2017. Up to now, we have enrolled 12 countries, including Mongolia, Russia, Canada, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan. There are 407 foreign students. In 2012, the school became the sponsor of the Ministry of Commerce's foreign aid training project. So far, it has successfully conducted nine multilateral foreign aid training sessions and two bilateral training sessions. It has trained 244 agricultural, animal husbandry and forestry officials, scholars and technicians from 44 countries.

The Party Committee of the School of Social Honor has won the honorary title of "National Advanced Grass-roots Party Organization". The school has been awarded the title of "Leifeng University", "May Day Labor Medal of the whole region". The Vocational and Technical College has been awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Collective of National Education System". The Academic Affairs Department has been awarded the Titles of "Advanced Educational Affairs Department" and "Excellent Educational Affairs Department" of National General Colleges and Universities, and the League Committee has been awarded the title "National May 4th Red Banner League Committee", the school has won many titles such as "National College and Secondary School Students Volunteer Summer"Three Rural"Excellent Unit" and "Advanced Collective of College Students'Work and Graduates' Employment Work in the Region". The Academy of Animal Sciences was awarded the National May 1st Labor Medal, the Veterinary Medical College was awarded the "Advanced Collective of National Unity in the Region", and the School History Exhibition Hall was designated as the "Inner Mongolia University Students'Moral Education Base".
