Northeast Forestry University was founded in July 1952, formerly known as Northeast Forestry College. It was established on the basis of the Forestry Department of Agricultural College of Zhejiang University and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College. It was directly managed by the former Ministry of Forestry. In August 1985, it was renamed "Northeast Forestry University". In March 2000, the State Forestry Administration was subordinated to the Ministry of Education. In October 2005, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, it became the key construction school of "211 Project". In June 2011, it became the key construction University of the national "Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project. In September 2017, it was approved by the State Council to be listed in the ranks of national first-class discipline construction universities. In November 2010, the Ministry of Education and the State Forestry Administration signed an agreement, and in March 2012, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province signed an agreement to cooperate in the construction of Northeast Forestry University.

Lao Lao School is located in Harbin, the center of the largest state-owned forest area in China. The campus covers 136 hectares. It also has teaching, scientific research and practice bases such as Mao Ershan Experimental Forest Farm (Mao Ershan National Forest Park) and Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm (Liangshui National Nature Reserve), with a total area of 33,000 hectares.

The National Life Science and Technology Talents Training Base jointly approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Education, and the National Science Basic Scientific Research and Teaching Talents Training Base (Biology) approved by the Ministry of Education are the pilot schools for the reform of the national education system, the national outstanding engineers and the pilot schools for the outstanding agricultural and forestry talents education and training program.

The school has more than 23,000 graduate students and full-time undergraduates. Since its establishment, more than 130,000 graduates have been sent to the country. At present, there are more than 2500 faculty members, including more than 1200 full-time teachers. A large number of outstanding professionals, managerial talents and innovative talents, represented by national and provincial leaders, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, business and business elites, have emerged.
