Shanxi Normal University is located in Linfen, the ancient Yao capital, which is the important birthplace of Chinese civilization. The school was founded in 1958. Its predecessor was Jinnan Teachers College. It was upgraded to undergraduate college in 1964 and named Shanxi Teachers College. In 1984, it was renamed Shanxi Normal University. In 1999, the Physical Education College of Shanxi Normal University (independent system) and Shanxi Vocational Teachers College were merged. In the past 60 years since its establishment, the school has been adhering to the fine tradition of normal education and constantly deepening the reform of teacher education. It has developed into a Provincial Normal University with complete training system and distinctive school-running characteristics, and is an important base for training teachers of basic education in Shanxi Province.
The school currently has 16 172 full-time undergraduates and 3810 graduate students. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the school has vigorously promoted the construction of key disciplines. According to the overall layout of "one body, two wings, and multi-point cooperation", the school has implemented the plan of upgrading key disciplines with the introduction of high-end talents and high-level teams as a breakthrough point. "One body" means teacher education as the main body, and "two wings" refers to the two first-level doctoral disciplines of drama and film and chemistry as the leading disciplines, radiating and leading the related disciplines of Dali and Dali, forming two dominant disciplines groups.
