Founded in 1984, the school has gone through the running stages of Shanghai College of Political and Legal Management Cadres, Shanghai College of Law and Shanghai University School of Law. General undergraduate students have been enrolled since 1993, and postgraduate students have been enrolled since 1998. In September 2004, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government approved Shanghai University of Political Science and Law as an independent general undergraduate college. In November 2014, the school was transferred to the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and co-constructed by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and the Shanghai Judicial Bureau.
