Tianjin Polytechnic University is a multi-disciplinary university with a combination of engineering and technology and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature and art. Former Tianjin Polytechnic College, Tianjin University began to recruit undergraduates in 1979 under the name of Tianjin University Polytechnic Branch, which was formally established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. In 1996, the former Tianjin Institute of Technology merged with the former Tianjin University Branch, the former Tianjin University of Mechanical and Electrical Technology Branch and the metallurgical Branch of Tianjin University to form a new Tianjin Institute of Technology. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Tianjin University of Technology in 2004.

The school is located at No. 391 Binshui West Road, Xiqing District, Tianjin. It covers an area of 15942,000 square meters and a building area of 769,600 square meters. There are 26 933 full-time undergraduates and above. There are 17 professional colleges, including continuing education institute, engineering training center, physical education department and information technology institute. There are 64 undergraduate majors, 19 master's degree programs, 3 doctoral programs (materials science and engineering, computer science and technology, management science and engineering), 2 post-doctoral research mobile stations (materials science and engineering, computer science and technology) and 12 key disciplines (computer science and technology, materials science and engineering, management science) in Tianjin. Project 2; compiled 14 national-level excellent and planned textbooks, which were approved by the Ministry of Education for 3 excellent video open courses and national-level excellent resource sharing courses, and won 7 national-level teaching achievement awards. Actively promoting the reform of Engineering education, four specialties have passed the certification of engineering education specialty.

Focus on the construction of teaching and scientific research innovation platform. At present, there are one national engineering laboratory, two key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, one joint research laboratory of the Ministry of Education, one engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, one joint innovation and intelligence introduction base of the Ministry of Education of the State Foreign Special Bureau, seven key laboratories of Tianjin, nine engineering centers of Tianjin, two humanities and Social Sciences bases of Tianjin and one think tank of Tianjin. There are one national experimental teaching demonstration center, one national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 13 construction units of Tianjin experimental teaching demonstration center, three national engineering practice education centers, and one national "undergraduate teaching engineering" undergraduate off-campus practice education base construction project. The building area of the library is 46,000 square meters. The wireless network covers the whole library. There are more than 203,000 books in paper, 128,320 books in electronic books and 50,000 kinds of electronic journals. There are more than 70 high-level databases in Chinese and foreign languages, such as Elsevier Science Direct, IEL, ACS, Wiley, SciFinder, SCI, EI, CNKI, etc. The voice room, multimedia classroom and laboratory equipment are advanced, and the facilities of university student activity center, gymnasium and track and field stadium are complete.

Schools vigorously implement the internationalization strategy. It has established friendly and cooperative relations with 118 famous universities and scientific research institutes in 31 countries and regions; has carried out cooperation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels with universities in Canada and Japan, and has trained the first batch of master's degree in project management in China; has been selected as the base of innovative introduction of new energy materials by the Ministry of Education and the "111 Plan" of the State Foreign Technical College; and has been granted scholarships by the Chinese Government to stay in China. Three Confucius Institutes have been set up in Poland, India and Ivory Coast.
