Tianjin Normal University is a key university under Tianjin Municipal Government. It was founded in 1958, formerly known as Tianjin Normal University, and renamed Tianjin Normal University in 1982. In 1999, the former Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin Normal College and Tianjin Institute of Education merged to form a new Tianjin Normal University.

The school covers an area of 3,500 Mu and an area of 840,000 square meters.

There are 23 colleges, 70 undergraduate majors, 8 doctoral degrees, 35 master's degrees and 15 master's degree categories, covering 10 disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art. The school currently has three members of the 7th Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council and 11 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. There are 2 national key disciplines, 7 first-class disciplines in Tianjin, 18 key disciplines in Tianjin, 4 "top priority" disciplines in Tianjin, 15 characteristic disciplines (clusters) in Tianjin, and chemical disciplines rank among the top 1% in the world. According to the results of the fourth round of discipline evaluation issued by the Degree and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, four disciplines of politics, Marxist theory, psychology and world history in our university were evaluated as B + disciplines, and two disciplines of pedagogy and Chinese language and literature were evaluated as B-disciplines. Six characteristic specialty construction points of Ministry of Education, 16 brand specialty construction points of Tianjin, five strategic emerging industries related specialty construction points of Tianjin, eight advantages and characteristics specialty construction points of Tianjin, and 12 application specialty construction points of Tianjin. Two national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 10 provincial and ministerial key laboratories covering humanities and Social Sciences bases, engineering centers and international joint research centers, and 7 post-doctoral research mobile stations. The school has built 9 national excellent resource sharing courses, 25 municipal excellent courses, 1 national teaching team, 11 municipal teaching team and 2 Tianjin "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" comprehensive investment teaching innovation team. It has won one first prize of the first national basic education teaching achievement, one first prize of the national teaching achievement award, two second prizes, and one first prize of the liberal arts group of the first national young university teachers'teaching competition.

The school has a national cultural quality education base for college students, a training base for key primary and secondary school teachers of the Ministry of Education, a training base for full-time personnel of the ideological and political education team in Tianjin, a training base for college counselors in Tianjin, and the first batch of demonstration schools for new media construction in Tianjin. The school regularly publishes 9 journals, such as Journal of Tianjin Normal University, Psychological and Behavioral Research, Teenagers Science and Technology Exposition, Journal of Mathematical Education, Middle Mathematics, History of Political Thought and Review of Economic and Social History.

There are 21 859 full-time undergraduates, 3 562 full-time Master students, 326 doctoral students and 2 482 international students at all levels. There are 2324 faculty members, including 1363 full-time teachers, 633 senior titles and 751 doctorates.

The school has a profound history of Humanities and social sciences.
