Tianjin Commercial University was founded in 1980 and belongs to the former Ministry of Commerce. Its name is Tianjin Business College. It was managed by Tianjin in 1998 and renamed Tianjin Commercial University in 2007. The aim of the school is to build a high-level university with distinctive business characteristics and to meet the needs of the society, so as to serve the economic and social development.

Located at No. 409 Glorious Road, Beichen District, Tianjin, the school covers an area of nearly 1340 mu, with a building area of nearly 490,000 square meters and a total value of 420 million yuan in teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment. The library has 210.98 million books in Chinese and foreign languages. It subscribes to more than 1200 kinds of newspapers and periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages, 107 databases in Chinese and foreign languages, and 4883.35 million books in electronic books every year.

There are more than 22,000 students in the school, including 14 colleges of mechanical engineering, economics, management, accounting, biotechnology and food science, law, public administration, Marxism, foreign languages, science, information engineering, International Education cooperation, art, higher vocational and continuing education and foreign language teaching in universities. Ministry, Basic Course Teaching Department and Physical Education Teaching Department are three teaching departments. There are 54 undergraduate majors (directions) and 68 master's degree programs, including 9 master's programs in first-level disciplines and 10 master's programs in professional degrees. The school has the right to recommend excellent undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduate free of examination, as well as the right to apply for Master's Degree Award for postgraduate enrollment in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The school has 7 key disciplines at the municipal level, 1 Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, 1 Tianjin Engineering Center, 2 Tianjin Key Laboratories, 2 Tianjin Key Research Bases of Humanities and Social Sciences, and 1 Tianjin University Think Tank. Finance specialty is the pilot specialty of national comprehensive reform, food science and engineering specialty is the first pilot specialty of national outstanding agricultural and forestry talents education and training program reform, energy and power engineering specialty is the pilot specialty of comprehensive reform in Tianjin and the pilot specialty of "outstanding engineer talents training" in Tianjin. The school has set up a national innovative experimental area for talent training mode of "International Hotel Management", a base for training excellent talents in China's tourism and hotel industry, and an off-campus practical education base for college students of Tianjin Commercial University-Yantai Ice Wheel Co., Ltd. The major of hotel management (Sino-US cooperation) has been evaluated by China Education Quality Evaluation Center of Wuhan University and China Science Evaluation Research Center of China. For 2014-2015 and 2017-2018, China's hotel management universities ranked first in the competitiveness list.
