Wenzhou University is the only comprehensive university in southern Zhejiang, northern Fujian and Eastern Jiangxi. It is located in Wenzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China, and known as "the best in the world in Southeast mountains and rivers". Wenzhou Normal University (founded in 1956) and Wenzhou University (founded in 1984) merged in 2004 and formed the school. After the evolution of "two schools merged, seven schools merged", the school can be traced back to the establishment of Wenzhou Normal School in 1933. In the course of 85 years of schooling, Wenzhou University has always adhered to the school spirit of "light big nation, benefit the people", constantly striving for self-improvement and hard entrepreneurship, and has achieved today's continuous cultural context, galloping and magnificent development pattern.

Wenzhou University has formed a multi-level and multi-form school-running pattern of undergraduate education, postgraduate education, continuing education, international student education and international cooperation education. Its disciplines cover nine categories: literature, science, engineering, law, pedagogy, economics, history, management and art. There are 15 colleges and Oujiang College (Independent College). "Teacher education", "innovation and entrepreneurship education" has prominent school-running characteristics. The school has two campuses, Chashan and College Road, covering a total area of 1985 mu; the campus area is 1012,800 square meters; the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 596 million yuan; the school-based library has 1815,000 paper books, 1794,000 e-books, and 86 electronic journals and databases in all kinds of Chinese and foreign languages. As of November 2018, there were 15203 full-time students (1538 postgraduates and 667 overseas students) and 8725 continuing education students. In 2003, the school became a master's degree granting unit. It now has 17 authorization points for master's degree in first-class disciplines and 12 authorization points for master's professional degree. In 2017, it was listed as the construction unit of the doctoral degree awarding unit in Zhejiang Province. Chemistry and Chinese Language and Literature are the first-class disciplines in Zhejiang Province (category A); Electrical Engineering, Law, Marxist Theory, Applied Economics, Mechanical Engineering, Ecology and Civil Engineering are the first-class disciplines in Zhejiang Province (category B). Chemistry has entered ESI for six consecutive years. According to the statistics of "China's Graduate Education and Subject Professional Evaluation Report", the competitiveness of graduate education in our school has been continuously improved from 63% in 2010 to 36% in 2017.

Schools focus on "one belt and one road", fully tap the resources of the world's Wenzhou people, vigorously implement the "study abroad" project, and constantly enhance the level of international education. The school is a training institution entrusted by the Chinese government scholarship. It has the qualifications to recruit undergraduate and master students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It is the first batch of Chinese education bases run by the State Council Overseas Chinese Office and the first batch of "Zhejiang International Characteristic University Construction Project" units. There are 2 National (border) cooperative undergraduate education projects, 13 undergraduate majors taught in English and 6 master's programs taught in English. So far, exchanges and cooperation have been established with 75 institutions in 18 countries and regions. In cooperation with Ken University of the United States, Wenzhou Ken University was founded, Confucius Institute was established with Oriental University of Thailand, and Wenzhou University Italian Branch was founded with the University of Florence and Siena of Italy.
