Xi'an Petroleum University is the only multi-disciplinary university in Northwest China, which is characterized by petroleum and petrochemical industry. It is an independent enrollment institution for foreign students from Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and three major national oil companies, a construction institution for high-level universities in Shaanxi Province and a Chinese government scholarship.

The school was founded in 1951 in Northwest Petroleum Industry College. In 1958, it was upgraded to Xi'an Petroleum Institute. In 1969, the college was shut down. In 1980, Xi'an Petroleum Institute was restored and rebuilt. In 2000, it was transferred from China National Petroleum Corporation to co-construction between the central and local governments, mainly under the management of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. In 2003, it was renamed Xi'an Petroleum University.

School Yanta Campus is located in Xi'an High-tech Industrial Development Zone Electronics Industrial Park, Mingde Campus is located in Zhangba East Road, Xi'an City, and Zhaoyi Campus is located in Xi'an Fengjing Industrial Park, Zhaoyi District, Xi'an City. The school covers 2133 mu, with a total fixed assets value of 2.714 billion yuan and a total equipment value of 543 million yuan.

The school enrolls students in 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government and in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has 14 colleges and 2 directly affiliated departments.
