Yuxi Normal University is located in one of the famous Top Ten Easygoing Livable and Environmentally Friendly Cities of Central Yunnan Province, Yuxi city, Nie Er’s hometown. It takes a root in Yuxi and adheres to the spirit of our university motto of truth, goodness, beauty and application. A central focus of the university is on standard education upholding t  he principle of people-first as well as those of reform and innovation. The large-scale cultivation of talented students caters to local and regional educational and economic demands. At the same time the university also attaches great importance on the inheritance and innovation of Yunnan National folk cultures. The university has been successively awarded the following honorary titles of: National Workplace for Culture, National School of Art Education and National Model Workplace for Tertiary-level Art Education in addition to these the university also won first prize in the assessment for the Yunnan Province University Graduates’ Employment Target for 11 consecutive years.

Yuxi Normal University is a full-time undergraduate-level university in Yunnan Province. In 1978 it was approved by the People's Government of Yunnan Province to establish the Yuxi Normal Diploma-level Training Class and expanded to Yuxi Normal Diploma-level College in 1983 with the approval of the provincial government. In 1992, the National Education Committee approved Yuxi Normal Advanced Diploma-level College. In 2000, with the permission of the Ministry of Education, Yuxi Normal University was built utilizing the shared resources of Yuxi Normal Advanced Diploma-level College, Yuxi Normal College and the Yuxi Adult Education Training Center. In 2007, the university achieved good grades in the appraisal of undergraduate teaching level from the Ministry of Education.

After years of construction and development, Yuxi Normal University has formed a trend of designing majors driven by the development of their respective disciplines. The university now has one Provincial University First-Class Discipline -- Fine Arts, three Provincial Second-Class Disciplines -- Environmental Chemistry, Human Geography, Environmental Science and Engineering, one Provincial Key Cultivation Discipline --mathematics, and three proposed and provincially authorized Master's Degree Disciplines -- Fine Arts, Physical Education and Chemistry. 

Yuxi Normal University has three Yunnan provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, one of which is the Mekong Sub-region Experimental Teaching Center of National Folk Art which was awarded the title of the first Workstation for Non-material Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Preservation by the Chinese Art and Anthropology Association. There are four key provincial laboratories, three key laboratories in Yuxi, and one talent training model at the Provincial Experimental and Innovation Centre at the university. In addition, the university also embraces eight scientific research institutions which are: Mekong Sub-region National Folk Culture Museum, Endangered Languages Institute, Paleontology Institute, Institute of Ethnic Culture and Social Development, Research Center of Yuxi Economic and Social Development, Ecological Environment Research Center of the Yuxi Plateau and Lake Area, Research Center for Pollution Control and Ecological Restoration and the Test and Analysis Center of Central Yunnan Province.

The Yuxi Normal University campus covers 728,914.5 square meters. It boasts 117.77 million RMB in assets for teaching, scientific research instruments and equipment. The library has a paper collection of 989,400 books, 805 kinds of paper periodicals, 29 professional databases which contain 858,300 e-books and 14,000 kinds of electronic periodicals. There are 14 colleges, 8 research institutes and 4 subsidiary teaching institutions under the university. At present, the university has 12,830 full-time students and 880 teachers and staff, 644 of which are full-time instructors, 57 of whom have senior titles, 171 of whom have vice senior titles, 63 of whom have doctoral degrees, 19 of whom are doctoral candidates, 411 of whom have a master's degree, 5 provincially recognized distinguished teachers, 1 Yunling culture expert educator, 1 young adult Academic and Technical Leader of the Yunnan Province, 5 Academic and Technical Leader of Yunnan Province young adult talents-in-training and 14 municipal academic leaders.

Yuxi Normal University has 47 undergraduate majors, among which Fine Arts is a nationally recognized specialty, Thai Language, Geographical Science, Biological Science and Art Design are considered as university characteristic specialties of the Yunnan Province. The university has 5 provincial teaching teams, 8 exceptional provincial courses, 1 provincial bilingual teaching demonstration course, 1 provincial innovation and experimentation center of law major application-oriented legal personnel training model, 2 provincial internship skill training bases at innovation and experimentation service centers and 4 provincial distinguished teacher studios.

Following the Twelfth Five-Year Guideline, the university has undertaken 566 research projects at home and abroad, including 18 National Social Science Fund projects, 13 National Natural Science Fund projects, 4 National Arts Fund projects, 94 provincial and ministerial projects, 295 prefect projects, and 145 horizontal projects. Teachers have published or edited 336 personal academic monographs and published textbooks along with more than 3,300 essays, 1,200 of which are published in core publications, and 380 of which are published in SCI, EI, ISTP periodicals etc. Seventy-two academic research projects or essays are awarded by relevant provincial and municipal departments. There are 2 public periodicals --Yuxi Normal University Journal and Yuxi Normal University Newspaper. In 2017, the university jointly with Huawei Technology Co., Ltd established the Yuxi University Intranet. In cooperation with the Yuxi City Government the Yuxi College of Culture and Innovation was established and further a Maker College was then established with the assistance of Xinhua Online.

Yuxi Normal University makes the most of the superior regional resources to develop scientific research and cultural inheritance. The university enjoys a regional advantage in Central Yunnan of multiculturalism along with being Nie Er's hometown. With the help of the Mekong Sub-region Experimental Teaching Center of National Folk Art and characteristic disciplines such as Fine Arts, Physical Education and Music, Yuxi Normal University continues to effectively excavate, collect, collate and promote folk culture and establish a good foundation for scientific research and innovation. This is to assist in forming the National Folk culture curriculum system with its distinctive characteristics as well as to cultivate a group of applied art and sports talents with an innovative spirit and ability and in so doing operate a distinctive educational institution. Moreover, thanks to the location being a core region for the research of the origins of animal life, the university has taken advantage of the nearby Maotian Mountain Cambrian Bio-fossils of Chengjiang Lake and founded the Paleontology Institute where teachers and students alike can research paleontology and ancient ecology.

With the promotion of China’s One Belt and One Road strategic planning, Yuxi Normal University has taken the initiative to integrate and serve major strategies of China and Yunnan and has always held the concept of globalization at its heart. While reinforcing the establishment of long-term and stable cooperative relationships with universities and schools in Thailand, Burma, Laos and other neighboring countries, the university has successively carried out various forms of joint education, from exchanges of teachers and students to academic and cultural exchanges with universities and colleges from the United States, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Korea and other countries. Yuxi Normal University has set up 20 internship bases abroad and 3 Chinese Language and Culture Centers overseas. At the same time, we too serve as the first Chinese language and culture education base for the Yunnan Province as well as a test site for the Chinese language proficiency exam otherwise known as HSK.

During the period of Thirteenth Five-Year Guideline and under the guidance of five major development philosophies of innovation, coordination, green development, openness and sharing, Yuxi Normal University which is itself based in Yuxi, serves the greater Yunnan province and the nation itself while expanding itself into Southeast Asia. It is believed this will accelerate the transformation and development of the university, strengthen the foundations, improve the quality of development, create unique characteristics all of which serve to assist in the goal of striving for an early establishment of unique university in Yunnan.
