Yanbian University is located in Yanji City, capital of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, which enjoys the reputation of "the Town of Education". It is the key construction University of "211 Project", the key construction University of Western development, the people's government of Jilin Province and the Ministry of Education.

Yanbian University, founded in 1949, is one of the earliest universities established by the Communist Party of China in minority areas. He was subordinated to the Ministry of Higher Education of the State Council and was subordinated to Jilin Province in 1957. In August 1958, Yanbian University was divided into Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College and Yanbian Institute of Technology. In 1996, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, five institutions of higher learning in Yanbian, including Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College, Yanbian Teachers'College and Yanbian Branch of Jilin Art College, were merged into a new Yanbian University; in October of the same year, the Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school-Yanbian University of Science and Technology (preparatory) was merged. With the approval of Jilin Provincial People's Government, Hunchun Campus of Yanbian University formally enrolled students in 2017.

Yanbian University has a wide range of disciplines, covering 12 disciplines besides military science. The school has 19 colleges and 76 undergraduate majors; 8 first-level doctoral degree authorized disciplines and 1 second-level doctoral degree authorized disciplines; 31 first-level master's degree authorized disciplines and 5 second-level master's degree authorized disciplines; 18 professional master's degree authorized points, 4 post-doctoral research mobile stations and 1 post-doctoral research workstation.
