Capital Institute of Physical Education is the only University of physical education in Beijing. It was founded in 1956 and its original name is "Beijing Sports School". In March 1960, with the approval of the Beijing Municipal People's Government, it was rebuilt as "Beijing Sports Teachers College" and became an undergraduate college. He was incorporated into Beijing Normal University in July 1962. In February 1979, Beijing Sports Teachers College was restored. In May 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Capital Institute of Physical Education.

The school currently has three campuses: its headquarters, its north campus and its Fenghuangling campus. There are nearly 5000 students in the school, including about 2800 undergraduates, about 800 doctoral and master students, about 700 adult education students, about 400 students in competitive sports schools and about 100 international students.

There are two authorized points for master's degree in physical education and psychology, six authorized points for master's degree in secondary disciplines such as physical education and training, sports human sciences, sports humanities and sociology, national traditional sports, sports rehabilitation and sports psychology, and two authorized points for master's degree in sports and Journalism and communication. It has three key disciplines in Beijing. In 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school began to train doctoral students jointly with Fujian Normal University; in 2012, with the approval of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, the school became a national project unit for training doctoral talents with special needs, and began to train doctoral graduates independently in 2013.

The school consists of seven institutes, including physical education and training institute, sports science and health institute, Wushu and performance institute, management and communication institute, leisure and social sports institute, continuing education institute, International Education institute, etc., one affiliated competitive sports school, three teaching and assistant units, and 19 party and government departments; sports education, sports training, sports human science and sports are set up. There are 11 undergraduate majors in sports rehabilitation, social sports guidance and management, leisure sports, martial arts and traditional national sports, dance performance, journalism, public utilities management, sports economy and management.

The school has one national practical education base for University students, two national specialty construction points, two national teaching teams, two national quality courses, one national quality resource sharing course, 20 national planning textbooks, and eight national and provincial research bases; the Asian University Sports Federation Education Development Center, the Ministry of Education, the National Chinese Language International Push The Guangwushu Training and Research Base, the Foreign Exchange and Training Center of the Student Sports Association of the Ministry of Education, the Sports Professional Committee of the China Higher Education Association, the Chinese Volleyball Research and Development Center, the National Campus Basketball League, the National Athletics and Amateur Training Base, the Beijing Campus Football Association, the Beijing Curling Association and other 15 associations have settled down or affiliated to schools.

The school signed the National Sports Administration to prepare for the London Olympics and Rio Olympics National Team's physical and sports function training team; undertook the Ministry of Education's "National Training Plan" and "National Students'Physical Health Standards" test data review; undertook the monitoring and analysis of students' physical health in Beijing, the education of active athletes'academic qualifications, the training of school sports teachers in traditional sports events, and social sports guidance. Training of reserve talents for competitive sports such as personnel training, basketball weightlifting and so on; leading the compilation of China Sports Industry Development Report and Beijing Sports Industry Development Report in Sports Blue Paper; hosting the World Snooker Open, Asian University Chess Championship, Sino-US Super Women's Volleyball Competition, National Sports College and Department Student Sports Arts Festival, National Sports Education Professional Basic Skills Competition, China International Association of Sports Universities "Olympic Competitive Sports and Mass Sports" Scientific Conference, World Association of Leisure Sports Entertainment Education International Academic Conference, International Coach Education Committee Asian Sports Coaches Seminar, Asian Children's Sports Association Asian Children's Sports Congress and other large-scale events and activities.

There are nearly 500 on-the-job faculty members and 86.7% of the faculty have master's degree and doctoral degree. Among them, 18 have won the title of world-class athletic master, 24 have won the title of international referee, 5 have served as national team coach or foreign martial arts team coach, 14 have served as national team scientific research and physical fitness coach or physiotherapist, and a group of millions of talented workers in the new century. State-level candidates and Beijing-level candidates, experts enjoying special allowances from the Government of the State Council, outstanding teachers of the whole country and Beijing, famous teachers of teaching in Beijing, candidates of the "100-person Plan for Excellent Young and Middle-aged Professional and Technical Talents" of the State Sports Administration, candidates of the "High-Creative Plan" of the Organizational Department of the Municipal Committee, candidates of "Great Wall Scholars" and top-notch innovative talents at Wall Scholars at City High-level professionals with the titles of top-notch talents, young talents and so on.

During the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, the school students participated in 392 sports competitions above the provincial level and won 128 international competitions. Among them, they won 33 first places in major international competitions such as the World Championships, the World Cup and the World University Games, and 46 first places in major Asian competitions such as the Asian Games, the Asian Championships and the Asian University Championships. The first place in the competition was 141, among which 102 people won the first place in major national competitions such as the National Games, the National Championships and the National Professional League.

Facing the new situation, the school upholds the school motto of "striving for innovation in the spirit of challenger", guided by social needs, taking building up people as its basic task, taking overall scientific development as its theme, taking improving the quality of personnel training as its core, reforming and innovating as its driving force, and adhering to the school-running concept of "meticulous education, fine management, fine construction and exquisite elegance" in order to build the school into China. First-class and internationally influential colleges and universities of physical education strive hard.
